Writing a Restaurant Review

The reason people usually read restaurant reviews is to decide which restaurants to go to and whether a specific restaurant would be suitable for their particular needs i.e. a fun night out with friends or a romantic dinner for two.  By describing the ‘flavour’ of the restaurant, a reviewer will be letting readers know whether it is the type of place they wish to visit and what to expect when they get there.

Evaluate the food and the overall experience.

We need to know what was particularly good and if there was anything bad about the food or service.  If you write anything good or bad it would be helpful if you could justify your comments.

If you have anything negative to say please be fair.  This means that your review should be based on true and provable facts.  Could it have just been a one off?   Did the staff do all they could to rectify the matter?

As well as discussing the food, please focus on the following different aspects of the experience:

The Menu

It is useful to give the reader some idea about what is available.  By this we don’t mean that you should list everything on the menu but it would be helpful to know, for example, if there is more than one vegetarian dish, or if the menu is more heavily fish than meat, is the selection of starters interesting? Is the selection of deserts imaginative?  Also is  it a set menu or not.  Sum up the style of the cuisine on offer.  Do they serve specials that change everyday?.  Do they use any interesting ingredients?

The Service

The type of service will be appropriate to the style of restaurant.  Obviously in an exclusive restaurant you might expect silver service and your chair held out.  It would be helpful if you could write about whether the staff were:

Polite and helpful

Friendly

Intrusive

Tried to rush you

Did you wait an acceptable time for your food and drinks to arrive.

Were the staff clean and tidy in their appearance.

Was the table clean and laid correctly?

The Food

Please write about how the food looks, smells and tastes.  Is the food visually appealing and properly cooked.  Was it made with fresh quality ingredients, is it seasoned enough, is there too much or not enough of anything i.e. sauce.  Is the temperature right.

The Atmosphere

This includes the décor and he style of the restaurant and might include comments on the location, the other diners and the popularity or ‘buzz’ of the restaurant.  Try to sum up the feel of the place.

Was the music playing quietly in the background or was it too loud?

Do they have live music occasionally if so what does that add to the ambiance?

The Cost

Was the food good quality and value for money.  Was a service charge added.

At the end of your review please state whether or not you would go back to the restaurant and whether you think it was value for money.
