Car Hire Insurance Excess Shock

Car Hire Insurance

Friends of our have recently returned from a holiday in Spain where they hired a car for the week.  When they picked the car up from the airport they were offered a damage excess waiver costing £6 a day which they refused, as they normally do.  They thought the Collision Damage Waiver that came in with the price  was cover  enough for any accidents with no more money to pay.  How wrong they were!

Unfortunately on this occasion they went into the back of another car which caused damage to the front of their hire car..  They were horrified to be told by the car hire company that over £500 would be deducted from their credit card to cover the excess.

With this in mind I was extra careful when I booked a car for our recent holiday to Menorca.  I thought I would be able to book through my normal company which includes insurance excess but as I had left it a bit late they had no small cars available and I had to look elsewhere.  After spending a whole day searching the internet I couldn’t find another company that included the insurance excess but did find a company Insurance4carhire who covers you not only for the total amount of Excess for which you are liable if the car is damaged or stolen, but also for damage to the roof and undercarriage of the car, and windows and tyres.  Most hire companies don’t insure you for these and you will find these exclusions in the small print. The cost of the cover is £49 for an annual policy which covers you for 31 continuous days for any one rental, and covers the policyholder and all additional drivers on the car rental agreement for multiple use throughout the year.

I am so pleased I found this insurance and because we go abroad 2-3 times a year it more than pays for itself and gives us piece of mind.
