Welcome to the first article for the Positive Health & Wellbeing page. I would firstly like to take the opportunity to introduce myself and offer you a little background about me. My name is Karen Leys and I work as an Wholistic Health Therapist. I have been both personally using and professionally studying wholistic health, personal and spiritual development and wellbeing for the past 20 years.
What began as an interest due to poor health, lack of confidence, self esteem, self understanding, and the real need to change my life, became a journey to health, happiness, fulfillment and prosperity. This put me in the fortunate position of working in a fulfilling career and life practice, allowing me to work with others through organizations, charities and in private practice sharing the insights and information I have gathered and experienced along the way.
I have studied and qualified many complementary therapies, counseling, meditation and relaxation techniques and what is now referred to as Energy Medicine.
Over the coming months I would like to be able to offer those of you interested, information and insight into how you can become the pilot of your personal health and wellbeing.
So I'd like to begin by wishing you all a Happy New Year, one I hope brings with it all you may be wishing for.
I'm pretty sure you, like myself again made some New Years resolutions – for example: I'm going to loose weight, get out of the job I hate – relationship that isn't working, quit smoking/drinking too much etc.etc……… the list can go on and on.So why is it that some (very few) people achieve the goals they set themselves , whilst others (the many) seem to fail time after time?
I, like many of you reading this have set myself 'goals' , thought about what I no longer want to continue doing, but found my resolve faded as quickly and the day! Over the 20 years I have made personal and spiritual development a major part of my life, I have made many changes to the life I was living, letting go of the things that I found no longer brought me pleasure/happiness.But with each change a period of ambivalence preceeded. My thoughts/mind would give me many reasons for not following through on the goal I had decided on, this would then step up a notch and begin to convince 'me' that I really didn't want/need to change, then I would find myself in a place where I began to believe this change would be of no benefit!!
Over the years I have observed and studied this process taking place in me and my clients and came to the conclusion and realization that it is not enough to make a resolution! In the past when I resolved to make a change to how I lived my life I noticed a feeling – that feeling was apathy, a half hearted thought of "you had better start….." and underneath this was a niggle, questioning whether I could really be bothered to create the changes to my routines, I quite liked them!
Then as I continued with this observation I would find that with each new attempt I was able to look a little deeper and realized the thing I was not doing was making a commitment to keep my word to myself!!! I was allowing myself the opportunity to go back on my word – but there again, that word wasn't very strong and didn't stand for much did it?
From this realization I made a pledge to myself to keep my word, not only to myself but also to others. The changes that followed were amazing, not only have I continually been able to make major changes that were being dragged through each New Year, I became more productive, feeling happy and positive that whatever I gave my word to I keep.
Why? Because I now only make commitments to myself not resolutions!
I offer you this as you may be struggling with your New Year's resolutions – simply ask yourself
if you lump all these aspects together into 'getting fit' then you are more likely find it difficult to achieve. I suggest you begin with just one – choose the one you feel will most easily fit into your daily life, then, most importantly KEEP IT REALISTIC!
If you choose to take more exercise for example, to start, make a commitment to yourself to fit in just 15minutes a day, of say just walking. Find a time in your day when you can walk for 7 ½ minutes in one direction then turn around and walk back! See if you are willing to make a commitment with yourself to do this and how easy
(or difficult) it is to keep your word to yourself.
The key to any significant changes to life are
take one thing at a time and you will soon be surprised at how the one thing affects and transforms the many.
Another tool that will assist you in any changes you wish to make is –
Focus on what you want in your life, NOT on the things you don't want!
The things you place your attention on, are the things that will grow! You need to visualize yourself : a non-smoker, slimmer, fitter, in the job you desire etc. whatever the change is keep it in your mind, strengthen that thought by playing it out as often as possible, imagine how you would feel if these things were in place – then you will begin to feel them growing in your life.Remember the saying – Like attracts Like – this is exactly it, what you think and feel about your life become your life!
In a future page we can explore this concept further – The power of Attraction!
For now just remember
A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.
Best wishes for an amazing 2007
