BANK CARD CLONING
There is an email circulating re bank card cloning.
Before posting this information I have checked that it is genuine with the originator and the Harlow Police.
Over the past 4 weeks local people have had their debit/visa cards cloned.
These people have been informed that money has been removed and or goods bought including air tickets, in India and America.
Some of the people that have had their cards cloned have been asked where their cards had been used during that time, and it would appear that some of them had used the same petrol stations.
The police have advised me this morning that if you use your credit card to pay for petrol or anything for that matter you should try and avoid handing it over. Most have the machines where you can put the card into the machine yourself. The problem seems to be when staff handle the card themselves as they can double swipe the card. They give you one receipt and keep one for themselves which has your card details on.
Areas for concern are:
Shell Garage on the Harlow Motorway Roundabout
Shell Garage in Epping High Road
Sainsbury’s Garage off Velize Avenue
Tesco Garage at Church Langley
I have been informed that one of the garages have been asking customers to leave their card with the cashier before filling the car with petrol. DO NOT hand your card over. You do not have to and you can always go elsewhere for your petrol if asked to do so.
All these locations have been reported to the police who are undertaking their own investigations.
If you have used a card in any of these stores please check statements and report anything strange to your Banks counter Fraud Department.
I will keep you informed of any updates.
Emails Received in connection with card cloning.
Please let me know if you have had your card cloned.
Name: Yvonne Bonnett Subject: Card Cloning Question/Comment: Thought I would drop you a line to say that on the 4th of this month I used my debit card to fill up at the Tesco garage in Church Langly and that very same day my details were used in the U.S.A New York to buy Dollars worth £297.11 then the following day a further £247.84 and £50.77 for the same thing. I think it is a great idea to have listed places of concern for people to see. I was lucky that I spoted this on the 5th and was able to cancel my card. I did not realise until speaking to people how common this is. |

| Hi Christine,
Further to our discussion earlier I just thought it may be of interest to you that I had a call from Barclaycard last week to inform me that my card had been cloned and used abroad. Their fraud team had picked up on the obviously out of character usage in a foreign country and contacted me and put an immediate stop on the account. Apparently I have heard that the clone may have taken place at the Church Langley supermarket service station!! ……. Which I use frequently….may be worth placing this info on your website. |
Hi me and my husband have been "cloned" too.... My husband uses shell in harlow and epping for his motorbike and I use church langley tesco for car petrol. Both cards that are used on a regular basis there have had monies taken out of. Our Abbey card which my husband uses has had money taken out of a cash machine in Canada USA. Whereas the HSBC card has had Indian Rupees taken out in India from a cash machine. On reporting both items to bank they have stopped both cards immediately.. Bank was aware of situation as when talking to girl in the branch she said i was about the 24th customer this week to report fraud (India). What is this world coming too!!! Chip and pin safer??? Yeah right!!! Think my grandad got it right storing money under the mattress eh lol!!! sorry forgot to mention they took out 22000 rupees which was £287 and Canadian dollars totalling £175.
